Kenya Weather

Che Shale has trade winds blowing consistently cross shore at varying strengths through the year, with four main seasons.

The Kuzi (South East Monsoon) howls in from late May to Mid July bringing 15 to 28 knots which can be gusty. It is the main rainy season, though there's always some sunshine and the air temperature will remain at around 28º, water at 24º. There's a decent swell and the sea gets choppy at times.

From Mid July to Mid October the Kuzi eases a bit and the wind maintains 15 to 18 knots all day, the rains go and it stays sunny and dry. Its all a little bit warmer with air at 29º and sea at 26º; the water is more unsettled and Che Shale becomes a great waveriding location.

Throughout the Kuzi it’s not unusual to be kiting 7 days out of 7 on anything between 8m and 14m kites. Learning conditions are perfect in the morning to early afternoon.

From Mid October to Mid December the Matalei prevails, its generally sunny with some short rains and unpredictable light winds as the season moves from Kuzi to Kaskazi. Its warm, but calm and flat.

The Kaskazi (North East Monsoon) swings over during December and stays until April. With wind speeds at 15 to 18 knots most afternoons and the sea state calm and flat, this is a fantastic learning season and great for flat water riders. Its more than 30º on the beach and the Indian Ocean is at its most beautiful with the water a warm 28º C.

In general the conditions allow for almost all year round kitesurfing!! The wind speeds vary depending on season with a minimum consistent average of 10 knots, going to 20 - 25 knots, and often increasing to 30.
